Clinics & Services

Nursing Team

The nurses run our various clinics for smears, asthma, diabetes, hypertension and CHD and are available in the surgery for dressings, injections, removal of stitches, health checks and ECGs. They also visit the housebound.

Nurses hours –  by appointment 08:30 – 12:30 & 14:00 – 18:00 (until 8pm on Tuesdays)

Our Nurse Associate supports the practice nurses with their daily work, hold clinics and carries out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and health checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.

Phlebotomy Clinic

We have a Phlebotomy (blood test) clinic here at the surgery by appointment only. We can also book you in at other local surgeries. Please check availability with our reception team.

Cervical Smears

You may make an appointment for a smear with the practice nurse during normal working hours. Please do not try to book in for a smear test unless you have had a letter from the Cervical Screening Service to say you are due. You can only have your smear test on or after the date you are due. Please note, If you wish to cancel your smear test, we ask you to kindly let us know as early as possible, as Nurse appointments which are cancelled at short notice can rarely be filled by another patient.

Social Prescribing Link Workers

We know that many of life’s problems can make us feel unwell. GPs tell us that a lot of people visit them feeling isolated or lonely; stressed out by work, money or housing problems; the stress of managing a long term health condition may be getting them down; they may not know what is making them feel low but they have come to their GP searching for help.

That is where Social Prescribing comes in.

Social Prescribing Link Workers are present in each surgery in Healthier South Wirral to help patients identify and link with sources of support within the community. These non-medical referral options can complement existing medical treatments to improve health and well-being.

Social Prescribing Link Workers are not medical professionals but have been specially trained to work alongside GPs and other clinical roles to ensure people get the care and support they need.

Our team of Social Prescribing Link Workers work in partnership with Citizens Advice Wirral and are here to give our patients a chance to talk; they will be listened to carefully, offered emotional and practical support and will be provided with the advice, information and support they need whatever their worries, questions or concerns.

Some examples of the type of support that can be provided are listed below:

● Being a non-judgemental listening ear; empowering with tools and techniques to balance every day stresses

● Referral into a specialist service for example for money advice (benefits, debt, and budgeting), housing needs, domestic abuse

● Encouragement to address lifestyle issues including healthy eating and physical activity, support to reduce dependency on alcohol, tobacco and other substances

● Support to manage a new health diagnosis or to positively manage a long term condition

● Joining a new course in the community where education and learning would be of benefit

● Referral into a specialist service for counselling and other mental health support

● Finding out what is available in the local community to help combat isolation and loneliness

● Finding a support group for a specific condition/health need

● Resolving practical issues around accessing food, fuel, prescriptions

RSV Vaccine

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that causes infections of the lungs and respiratory tract, which can be serious in young children and older adults. The RSV vaccine helps protect against serious illness from RSV and is offered to anyone aged 75-79 and pregnant women after 28 weeks of pregnancy, to pass protection to their babies.

Childhood Vaccinations

Tetanus and poliomyelitis are serious and sometimes fatal illnesses that can be prevented by immunisation. If you have had a full course of immunisation against these illnesses up to school leaving age you should be fully protected. If you are not protected please make an appointment with the practice nurse. The polio vaccination is especially important  for parents of pre-school age infants attending for their immunisations.

Parents , please ensure your children receive the full immunisation programme. Details can be obtained from our practice nurse or health visitors. If you have any doubts about completion, please ask for advice.

Before bringing your baby for their Meningitis B vaccine, please give infant paracetamol. High rates of fever have been reported in infants receiving the Men B vaccine with their routine immunisations. Use of paracetamol has been advised for infants at the time of immunisation with the Men B vaccine to prevent fever. The guidance is that parents are to give 2.5ml (120mg/5ml) of liquid paracetamol to their babies around the time of immunisation or as soon as possible after the vaccines are administered. Parents will also be advised to give two further doses at 4-6 hourly intervals. Nurses will provide further information to parents at the immunisation appointments.
